JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Supervisor, Community Services, the Youth Wellness Hub Coordinator (herein, “Coordinator”) plays a lead role in establishing a safe and welcoming Youth Wellness Hub (herein, “Hub”) for youth 12 to 25 years of age. Through collaboration with the Youth Action Committee, Hub partners, Hub staff, Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario, and the multi-disciplinary team at Algoma Family Services (AFS) the Coordinator will: orchestrate the delivery of services and programs at the Hub, participate in the evaluation of services, attend to service or building concerns, maintain Hub communications, and oversee all aspects of the Hub’s operations.
As a member of the AFS Team, the Coordinator plays an integral role in promoting our culture of care through the modelling of our organizational values and delivering on our mission, vision, and strategic objectives, with kindness, compassion, and care. Extraordinarily committed, the Coordinator will also promote inclusive and culturally sensitive services from a trauma-informed, client-centered, strength-based, and solution-focused approach within an anti-oppressive practice context.
MINIMUM EDUCATION
• Child and Youth Care Practitioner or Social Service Worker Diploma
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
• Two (2) years’ experience working with children, youth, and families, or the equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
• Experience working with and creating positive spaces for high-risk and marginalized youth using an anti-oppressive, inclusionary, and strength-based approach; specifically with 2SLGBTQIA+, Indigenous, and racialized youth.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Possess a caring, kind, and empathic approach in the engagement of children, youth, and their families in a manner that is consistent with the AFS vision and organizational values. Certification in Crisis Prevention and Intervention, and possess the ability and confidence to act calmly in situations demanding quick assessment and immediate action.
• Certification in First Aid and CPR is an asset.
• Training in WHIMIS, Naloxone administration, Mental Health First Aid, ASIST, and cultural competence.
• Advanced knowledge of and ability to apply behavioural management approaches in a manner that promotes the youth’s development of self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-worth.
• A solid understanding of the effects of abuse and neglect, separation and attachment, grief and loss, on child development.
• Demonstrate an understanding of age and developmentally appropriate behaviour for youth.
• Experience working with neuro-diverse youth (for example, ASD or FASD diagnosis).
• Ability to provide pro-social skill-building training to the youth and Hub staff.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team, participate in supervision; incorporate constructive feedback, attend meetings, and complete assigned paperwork with accuracy and on-time.
• Knowledge of pertinent legislation, such as: the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, Mental Health Act, Education Act, the Youth Criminal Justice Act, Health and Safety Regulations through the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
• Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships with youth, community partners, and colleagues.
• Proficiency with computers, specifically software, such as: Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint, as well as, client information management systems.
• Ability to provide services in both official languages (English/French) is an asset.
• Possession of a valid Ontario Driver’s License, ability to travel, and use of a personal vehicle.
• Availability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends, and on-call.
• Full COVID-19 Vaccination.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Maintain the confidentiality of Hub clients and guests, as well as, client information at all times as per AFS policies and procedures.
2. Maintain a Youth Action Committee (YAC) with the assistance of volunteer adult allies, AFS Youth and Family Engagement Coordinator, Supervisor, and community partners.
- Recruit and train volunteer adult allies.
- Coordinate, schedule, attend, and record committee meetings.
- Ensure honorariums are provided to YAC members.
- Work to recognize and resolve any identified challenges in a timely manner.
3. To work with the YAC, Hub Team, AFS staff, Youth Wellness Hub Ontario (YWHO) staff, community partners, and interested parties in the development, evaluation, and ongoing provision of services and programs (virtual and in-person).
- Assist with the collection and preparation of data for submitting statistical and program reports.
- Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders.
- Develop a Hub marketing strategy in collaboration with the Supervisor, Community Services
- Develop in collaboration with the AFS Foundation, fundraising campaigns.
- Work with YWHO, and the AFS Finance and Data Analyst on the development of performance metrics and evaluation of services.
4. Facilitate active engagement of youth at the Hub and provide support through referring any youth in need of crisis service, mental health, or other core service supports to appropriate clinical staff and programs.
5. Develop a marketing strategy seeking the input of youth such as the New Northern Mentality Group, and any other youth stakeholder, to promote the Hub and Virtual Youth Hub.
6. Coordinate the day-to-day operation of the Hub including but not limited to:
- Schedule of services and program space.
- Procurement of goods and services as approved by the Supervisor.
- Timely communication of any building issues to the Supervisor.
- Development of a communication channel for youth (utilize the The YWHO website, the Hub Team, Supervisor, and YWHO Provincial networks.
- Daily liaison with on-site Hub partners to attend to and forecast Hub related needs.
- Ensure the Hub site and grounds are maintained and in good order.
- Develop an electronic daily logging system to note key activities and to report on any serious incidents.
- Complete daily inspection of the building interior and exterior, noting and acting on any issues.
7. Provide caring, empathic, and compassionate care to Hub clients/guests in a manner that promotes relationship building, attending to conflict from a learning
8. To model pro-social appropriate behaviour consistent with the organizational values of AFS as a way of influencing the youth’s perspective of others, themselves, and to build trust and respect, even when the youth is not reciprocating the same level of respect.
9. Ensure the safety and well-being of the Hub by creating and/or contributing to the development and maintenance of a welcoming space. This includes awareness of the youth’s culture, beliefs, family traditions and norms. In addition, to recognize that a youth acting out or acting in behaviour, is a manifestation of unattended trauma, hurt, and pain often caused by adults they trusted.
10. Work directly with the Hub team to assist youth in the transition to and from the Hub, including but not limited to assisting in the transportation of youth and purchasing of personal items.
11. Assist youth in the development of pro-social and life skills such as budgeting, grocery shopping, meal preparation, relationship building, self-care, and household duties.
12. Transport safely the client to appointments or activities as needed or arrange for this transportation.
13. Assist Hub clients with activities as required.
14. Facilitate the development of formal and informal youth support networks promoting the involvement of family, friends and community members.
15. Adhere to and implement AFS policies and procedures and Ministry regulations related to the safety and care of the youth; as well as, the service providers and allies in the Hub, specifically in relation to health and safety.
16. Maintain communication through contact notes, electronic communication, phone calls, or in-person engagement with the Supervisor and Hub Team.
17. Complete required reports with accuracy including any Serious Occurrences/Critical Incidents as per the Ministry requirements and AFS policies, not limited to: emergencies such as runaways, accidents, or medical problems.
18. Report any suspected abuse or neglect of youth receiving service as required by legislation within the specified timelines, as per the regulations.
19. Work on-call as scheduled or as requested.
20. Attend and actively participate in team meetings, training, organizational and YWHO events, and promote the vision and mission of YWHO and AFS in the community.
21. Develop a personal professional development plan.
22. Assume other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by the Supervisor or Manager.
